The first chords to learn

As a beginner you must be wondering where to start. Common sense says you should start with the easiest things. So here are the most basic and easiest three chords to learn on the guitar. These chords are Em (E minor),E (E major or simply E) and A sus2 (A suspended second or A sus two in short).
Representation of chords is very simple and the same is given below for these three easy chords. Just have a look and I will tell you how to play them.
Em chord

E major chord

A sus 2 chord

A dot on the string means you have to fret (hold with your finger tips) those notes. The strings on which there is no marking, you need to play them open. Sometimes the letter "O" is written on the top of the string which needs to be played open. You can see a cross mark on the sixth string in the representation if the A sus 2 chord. It means you do not have to play that string. While playing you should mute it.
Now to practice playing these chords, a very basic strumming pattern will be required. I suggest you to first become comfortable with the strumming pattern. So do not play any chord. Just try to play the strumming pattern with your right hand while your left hand is doing nothing at all. After you are comfortable, grab the chord with your left hand and start playing the strumming pattern over the chord.
The strumming patterns are represented with the letters D and U. D means a down strike and U means an up stroke. So considering this representational scheme, I would suggest to a beginner to learn these strumming patterns first. I have three of them. First one is DDDD. Second pattern is DUDU. And the third one with some musical sense and believe me widely used in many songs is DDUUDU.
