So in this post, you will get to know how a chord is constructed. The major scale formula as stated earlier was W-W-H-W-W-W-H. Using the formula, the C major scale has the following notes:
C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C.
So there are in total seven distinct notes in any major scale. The scale notes can be numbered starting from the root note and are called degrees. So the degree of the notes in the C major scale (and similarly for any major scale) can be denoted as follows:
C-(I)
D-(II)
E-(III)
F-(IV)
G-(V)
A-(VI)
B-(VII)
So what is the fifth degree in the C major scale? That's a G. Right?
Now, there are two most basic type of chords (also known as triads as they contain 3 notes) that you will be encountering. Those are your basic major and minor chords.
The formula for major chord is:
1-3-5 (it means the major chord is made up of first (root note), third and fifth degree of the scale)
So C major chord contains what notes? Of course, C, E and G.
The formula for minor chord is:
1-b3-5 ( first, flat third and fifth degree)
So, C minor chord contains the notes: C, Eb and G.
Ok, suppose i want to know what notes are there in a G major chord. Let us first write the scale.
G major: G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G.
Now major chord formula: 1-3-5
So G major chord contains the notes: G-B-D.
